Online Tool: Where’s My Refund?

The IRS provides an online tool called Where’s My Refund? which you can use to check the status of your refund. By using this tool, you can easily track your IRS refund. This tool is updated once every 24 hours and provides three stages of your refund status:

Return Received: The IRS has received your tax return and is processing it.

Refund Approved: Your refund has been approved and is being prepared for issuance. You can track your IRS refund to know its current stage.

Refund Sent: Your refund has been sent to your bank or mailed to you. You can track your IRS refund even after it has been sent to keep updated on its status.

IRS2Go Mobile App: You can also track your refund using the IRS2Go mobile app. This app provides the same information as the online tool and is convenient for checking your refund status on the go.

Phone: If you prefer, you can call the IRS automated refund hotline at 800-829-1954 for current-year refunds or 866-464-2050 for amended returns. This allows you another way to track your IRS refund.

What You Need to Check Your Refund Status

To check your refund status, you’ll need:

Your Social Security Number or Individual Taxpayer Identification Number (ITIN)

Your filing status (e.g., single, married filing jointly)

The exact refund amount shown on your tax return

IRS Refund Timing

E-Filed Returns:

• Refund status is usually available within 24 hours after the IRS receives your e-filed return.

Paper Returns:

• It can take up to 4 weeks for the status to be available

IRS Refund Delays

Your refund may be delayed if your return needs corrections or additional review. If the IRS needs more information, they will send you a letter.
